Thumbs up Lyfe Jennings new album

Lyfe's back! Check out this interview:
QtheQuestion.com writer Tiffany Gordon gets in-depth with Lyfe Jennings to see what’s next. With a new album in the making Lyfe is calling this his last album as it’s time to handle major responsibility in his life.

Author: Tiffany Gordon

Tiffany Gordon: I noticed you’ve started your own record label, “Jesus Swings”, why did you decide on that name?

Lyfe Jennings: Because I feel we do responsible music on this label and Jesus through his trials and tribulations, it goes up and down like a swing. He always comes out responsibly and you know that’s what I try to do.

TG: So why did you decide to start your own label?

LJ: I definitely wanted more control, no matter what it was, the music. It’s an opportunity for a bigger payday; you know things considering the right move.

TG: How did you come up with the name Lyfe?

LJ: That’s pretty much just from life situations.

TG: How do you feel you have grown since your first album?

LJ: Musically I feel that I am better at the musical craft of things. So as far as the sonics of the music and I think that I’ve made it a lot simpler, I’ve cut down the number of words I use because for a lot of times I used more words. I think personally, you learn to respect a lot of things that you have more, because a lot of times when stuff come fast it goes fast. After you’ve got all that out your system you’ve got to respect and kind of monitor what you spend and I’m not just talking about money, I’m talking about time too.

TG: You’ve been in the game for a few years now; do you feel that you have lost any friends along the way?

LJ: I don’t think I’ve lost a lot of friends along the way, I think I’ve gained fake friends along the way. That’s a pretty unique situation, because when I got out of prison I was on my own so when I came home I didn’t have nobody like that. I should’ve continued with it for real for real.

TG: In your music I’ve noticed that you’re not afraid to be socially conscious and talk about what’s goin’ on out here…

LJ: For one probably, because it works and partly because its the truth. That’s kind of like my style. The streets is funny so why not talk about the truth.

TG: How do you come up with your song concepts?

LJ: Life. My life, other peoples’ lives and some times it just comes from an idea. I have a song on the new album with Bobby Valentino called “The Auction” Its about a female who puts her body up for auction to the highest bidder. So that was just an idea, you know.

TG: So your new album is set to drop September 22, 2009, what should we expect?

LJ: Since this is my last album, I’m going to have to make it the best album possible. Work with some people that I never probably would’ve had a chance to work with. You know, just make it the best album that I possibly can!

TG: Whoa, this is you last album?

LJ: Yea this is my last solo album right here. I have two little boys and they are at the age where they really need me there and I can’t be on the road 6-7 months. I can’t give the music thing my all anymore. I’ve had to focus on music for a long time and I had a great career and I want these boys to have a great life, so in turn I have to focus on them.

TG: Ok cool. So who do you listen to?

LJ: Right now I listen to that cat Drake, cause I feel that he’s real without bein’ crazy raunchy like rappers are now. I’m not hatin’ if that’s they thing. I also listen to the regular old school stuff like Pac, Snoop, Biggie, Miles Davis; you know cats like that.

TG: What do you think of the state of Black music? You know how people keep sayin’ hip-hop is Dead!

LJ: I think that things just change, bottom line. I think you have to just be versatile. You have to take that change and kind of work your own style into that change. I don’t think hip-hop is dead. Just like I don’t believe auto tune is dead you know all of these things that are not in season anymore. The good thing about positive music is that there is always positive music around it’s just not a lot of it around. But they always say that the smallest number of any given portion is the most important. So with that being said, anything that is the greatest is always gon’ to be the smallest portion. So people should be happy that there isn’t a lot of positivity in music or not too much homophobia or there’s not enough cultural music out there because that means that it’s still important. If it wasn’t important then it would just be a fad and everyone would be doing it and it would kind of diminish its actual meaning.

TG: What is your greatest accomplishment?

LJ: My greatest accomplishment is getting insurance for my kids. I didn’t have it growing up and I think it’s a great thing.

TG: What’s your motivation?

LJ: I guess in the beginning my motivation was that I felt like I had something to say…my voice was my motivation. Then I guess it transformed into making sure that it was a quality voice to make sure that it represented a lot of people who don’t really have representation.
